How to Register an Emotional Support Animal in the UK
An Emotional Support Animal can provide reassurance, stability and companionship to someone living with a mental health condition or hidden disability. ESA Registry UK provides private registration, documentation, online validation and ongoing member support for eligible applicants throughout the United Kingdom.
This guide explains the evidence required, the registration process, the available options and the important limitations people should understand before applying.
Who can apply for ESA registration?
An applicant should have a genuine mental health condition, emotional health need or hidden disability for which an animal provides meaningful support. The animal may be a dog, cat or another suitable companion animal, provided its ownership and care comply with applicable UK laws.
Registration does not turn an animal into an assistance dog or service animal. Applicants remain responsible for the animal’s behaviour, welfare and compliance with housing, transport and public-access rules.
What medical or professional evidence is required?
ESA Registry UK requires supporting evidence from a suitably qualified healthcare or mental health professional. This could include a GP, psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, nurse practitioner or consultant who understands the applicant’s circumstances.
The evidence should confirm that the person has a relevant health condition or disability and that the animal provides emotional or therapeutic support. It does not need to disclose unnecessary private medical details.
If suitable evidence is not available when applying, it may normally be supplied within eight weeks of registration. A medical template can be requested for the professional to complete.
How the registration process works
- Select the registration option that best suits your needs.
- Enter the handler’s and animal’s details carefully.
- Upload a clear photograph of the animal.
- Provide suitable medical or professional evidence, or arrange to supply it within the permitted period.
- Complete payment through the secure official registration page.
- Once processed, access the applicable digital documents and membership information through the ESA Registry App.
UK registration options
Optional extras: A blue card holder and ESA lanyard are not included in the Premium, Standard or Digital registration package. They may be purchased separately where offered.
The holder and lanyard combination is £12. Standard orders require separate tracked postage and packaging of £6. Premium orders do not add separate lanyard postage when the optional items are dispatched with the Premium package.
Using the ESA Registry App
Registered members can use the ESA Registry App to view relevant membership information and access available digital documents. Online registration validation helps third parties check that registration details correspond with the registry record.
App access and registry services apply while the registration remains current. Members should keep their details accurate and renew before expiry if they wish to maintain access and support.
What registration does and does not provide
ESA Registry UK is a private, independent registry. It is not a government body, and UK law does not create a single automatic public-access right for every Emotional Support Animal.
Registration and supporting medical evidence can help a member explain their circumstances and request consideration, but decisions by landlords, transport operators, employers and other organisations depend on the facts, their policies and applicable law.
For accommodation matters, read the ESA housing guidance. For airline and international journeys, consult the air-travel guide before booking.
Housing and reasonable-adjustment requests
A person whose condition meets the relevant legal definition of disability may be able to request a reasonable adjustment from a landlord, housing provider, university or other organisation. Each request is considered individually, and registration alone does not guarantee approval.
Clear medical evidence, responsible animal care and an explanation of how the animal supports the person can assist the organisation in considering the request.
Travelling with an Emotional Support Animal
Airlines, ferry companies, rail operators and coach companies have their own animal policies. Many airlines no longer treat ESAs as assistance animals, although some permit smaller animals under their ordinary pet-travel rules.
Current registered members who need supporting information for a journey can use the travel support letter request page. Always obtain written confirmation from the operator before purchasing non-refundable tickets.
Avoid unofficial and misleading registration websites
Be cautious of websites that promise automatic legal rights, guaranteed airline access or government certification. Those claims may be misleading.
Use the official ESA Registry UK website and secure registration page. Check the website address carefully before entering personal or payment information, and contact the support team if an email or payment request appears suspicious.
