We provide a clear, responsible pathway for registering your Emotional Support Animal (ESA) when your medical or mental health condition benefits from an animal’s support. Councils, universities and housing providers across the UK use our service to help validate ESA registrations.

Who ESA Registration Is For

ESA registration is intended for people whose medical or mental health condition benefits from the presence of an Emotional Support Animal.

Emotional Support Animals can be many different species and do not require task-based training like service dogs. However, an ESA must be:

  • Well behaved in public and at home.
  • Not aggressive or disruptive.
  • Properly cared for and controlled by the owner or handler.

We also recommend public liability insurance, particularly when using shared or rented accommodation or taking the animal into public places.

Medical Evidence Requirement

ESA registration requires confirmation from a qualified medical or healthcare professional that you require an Emotional Support Animal because of a health or mental health condition. We understand that appointments can take time, so evidence may be submitted within eight weeks after registration if it is not available now.

Please Be Cautious of Self-Certification Claims

Services claiming that an ESA can be registered with no medical involvement should be treated with caution. ESA status is based on a genuine support need, not self-certification.

Your Rights and Responsibilities

People with disabilities and qualifying health conditions may have protection from discrimination under UK law when supported by appropriate medical evidence. Relevant legislation can include the Equality Act 2010, Mental Health Act 1983 and Human Rights Act 1998. An ESA registration does not give an animal the same legal access rights as a trained assistance dog.

Emotional Support Animals are not automatically permitted in aircraft cabins when entering the UK. Always check the current rules directly with the airline and the UK authorities before travelling.

Premium and Standard registrations include standard UK postage. Tracked UK postage can be added for £10.00. An additional physical ESA ID card can be added for £10.00. A combined blue card holder and blue lanyard can be added to Premium or Standard for £12.00. Standard orders also add £6.00 for separate tracked postage and packaging from the lanyard fulfilment site; Premium has no additional lanyard postage charge.

How to Register

  1. Complete every required section of the registration form below.
  2. Enter accurate information about the owner or handler and the animal.
  3. Upload a clear current photograph of the animal.
  4. Upload medical and training evidence if you have selected “Yes.” Medical evidence not available now must be supplied within eight weeks.
  5. Enter the home address and the UK postal delivery address.
  6. Choose Premium, Standard or Digital registration and select any extras.
  7. Read and accept the terms, complete the security question, then review every detail carefully.
  8. Confirm the application and pay securely by debit card, credit card or PayPal.
  9. After successful payment, your registration number is created and confirmation is emailed immediately. Your complete registration information and digital documents will follow within 24 hours.

1. Responsibility for the animal

I understand that the behaviour of any dog or other animal cannot be guaranteed and may sometimes be unpredictable. I remain responsible for the supervision, handling, control, care, health, welfare and behaviour of the animal named in this application.

I agree to take reasonable precautions and accept responsibility for any injury, loss, damage, cost or liability caused by the animal where I am legally responsible. The animal must remain appropriately controlled, must not present an unreasonable risk, must behave appropriately in public and must be cared for in accordance with applicable law.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, ESA Registry UK and their employees, officers, directors, agents and contractors will not be responsible for injury, loss, damage, claims, costs or expenses arising from the behaviour, handling, ownership, training or presence of my animal, except where liability cannot lawfully be excluded or where loss results from the organisation’s own negligence or legal breach.

2. Training and registration status

I confirm that I have accurately stated whether the animal was trained by an organisation, an independent trainer, an owner or handler, is currently undergoing training, or has not received task-specific or public-access training.

I understand that registration does not turn an untrained animal or ordinary pet into a trained assistance dog. Registration does not certify an animal as professionally trained, task-trained or suitable for unrestricted public access unless that description is accurate and supported.

3. Purpose and limitations of registration

I understand that registration is a voluntary record of the information supplied. It is not a compulsory government registration or licence, does not independently prove disability or training, does not guarantee access and does not replace assessments or evidence lawfully required by businesses, landlords, employers, education providers or transport operators.

Identification cards, certificates, letters, harnesses, leads, badges, lanyards and vests do not independently create legal status or guarantee access. Rights and reasonable adjustments depend on the individual circumstances and applicable law.

4. Accuracy and evidence

I confirm that all information and evidence supplied is complete, current and accurate to the best of my knowledge. ESA Registry UK may reasonably verify submitted evidence. False, misleading, incomplete, altered or fraudulent information may result in refusal, suspension or cancellation.

5. Personalised goods, services and cancellation

I understand that identification cards, certificates, letters, portraits and other items containing individually selected information are personalised or made to my specifications. I expressly request that review, registration, digital-document and personalised-item work begins after my application and payment are accepted.

Correctly produced personalised goods cannot ordinarily be cancelled, returned or refunded merely because I no longer want them. This does not affect statutory rights where an item is faulty, damaged, incorrectly produced, not as described or otherwise fails to meet legal requirements.

I must check all information before submission and payment. ESA Registry UK is not responsible for errors in personalised items where those items accurately reproduce the information I supplied, although corrected replacements may be available at additional cost.

6. Applicant’s confirmation

By submitting the application, I confirm that I have read and understood the terms, accurately declared training status, understand the difference between registration and training, accept responsibility for the animal and expressly request that registration services and personalised and digital production begin after acceptance and payment.
