Understand what UK ESA registration means

The United Kingdom does not operate a government Emotional Support Animal register. ESA Registry UK is an independent private registry. Registration can provide a documented record and member services, but it does not automatically create public-access rights or guarantee acceptance by landlords, universities, employers, airlines or businesses.

Warning signs to look for

  • Claims of a government-approved or official UK ESA licence where none exists.
  • Promises of guaranteed entry to shops, restaurants, flights or accommodation.
  • Claims that buying a certificate automatically gives the animal assistance-dog status.
  • No clear explanation of medical or professional evidence.
  • Pressure to pay immediately or unexplained recurring charges.
  • No visible business identity, contact information, privacy notice or terms.
  • Publicly searchable certificates exposing customer or animal information.
  • Requests to pay through an unfamiliar link or an unverified recipient.

Checks to make before paying

  1. Check the exact website address and look for misspellings or imitation domains.
  2. Confirm the organisation's contact details and history.
  3. Read what the service includes and what it does not provide.
  4. Review the total price, renewal position, cancellation terms and refund policy.
  5. Read the privacy notice and check how medical evidence and personal data are handled.
  6. Use a secure payment page and retain the receipt and confirmation.
  7. Be cautious of legal claims that do not link to authoritative UK guidance.

Protecting personal and medical information

Only provide information that is necessary for the stated service. Check whether evidence is retained, who can access it and how deletion requests are handled. A responsible service should not expose personal registry records to search engines.

If you believe you have been misled

Keep copies of the website claims, emails, receipts and payment records. Contact the provider first, then speak to your card issuer or payment provider if appropriate. You can also obtain consumer-rights advice or report suspected fraud through the relevant official service.

ESA Registry UK's position

ESA Registry UK has operated as an independent registry since 2018. We explain that the animal may support a disabled person as a medical aid, while the person's rights and any reasonable-adjustment request depend on the law and the individual circumstances.
