Episode 8
Susan and Poppy: Autism, Comfort and Family Support
Susan and her mother, Iwona, share how Poppy, their border collie, supports Susan through sensory overload, exam stress and everyday challenges. They discuss the impact of being separated during emergency accommodation, the comfort Poppy brings to their household, and how the family shares responsibility for his care.
About this episode
Susan joins The Emotional Support Animals Show with her mother, Iwona, to discuss Poppy, her border collie and emotional support animal. Originally brought home as a family dog, Poppy became an important source of comfort. Susan describes how his companionship helps when she feels overwhelmed and recalls the reassurance he provided during stressful GCSE revision. Iwona shares her perspective on the difference their bond has made to Susan’s confidence and the wider family.
The episode also explores their experience of emergency accommodation where Poppy could not stay with them, the difficulty of visiting him while he was with a foster family, and challenges around housing permission. Alongside these experiences, Susan and Iwona discuss finding pet-friendly holidays, choosing an animal carefully, building a bond over time, and sharing feeding, play and other care responsibilities across the household.
This episode was published on 15 July 2025; the recording date has not been confirmed. The family describes its own experiences of housing and emergency accommodation. Policies, legal guidance and individual accommodation decisions can change, and ESA registration or supporting paperwork does not guarantee acceptance. Viewers should check current requirements and discuss their needs with the relevant housing authority, landlord or accommodation provider.

Let's get started.

1 minute, 27 seconds
Move it more to myself and Poppy and um Susan will next class.
Chapter 2: Susan and Poppy
1:35
1 minute, 35 seconds
Welcome to the show. Could you both start introducing yourselves?
1:39
1 minute, 39 seconds
Yes, Suzan, would you like to start with yourself? Um, my name is
1:46
1 minute, 46 seconds
I'm 15 and I have an emotional support
1:53
1 minute, 53 seconds
and his name is Poppy. He is six years old. So, he yeah been with us for a while.
2:02
2 minutes, 2 seconds
Okay. So Suzanne, can you tell us about your ESA? What kind of animal is it, its name, and how it became part of your life?
2:11
2 minutes, 11 seconds
Um, his name is Poppy. He's a border collie, and he was pretty unexpected. My
2:20
2 minutes, 20 seconds
mom kind of brought him home as a surprise, as like a family dog. And over time, we
2:27
2 minutes, 27 seconds
realized that he was really good at noticing when we had stronger emotions and he would help calm us down.
Chapter 3: How did you feel when your daughter brought up the idea
2:39
2 minutes, 39 seconds
for you. How did you feel uh when your daughter um did she bring up the idea
2:45
2 minutes, 45 seconds
for emotional support animal or did you uh actually um well this is a a long story but keeping it short um none of us
2:55
2 minutes, 55 seconds
I don't think none of us even ex knew it exists. So um he kind of he become a
3:01
3 minutes, 1 second
part of our family and um it's just happened by itself you know
3:11
3 minutes, 11 seconds
none of us really expected that he just become our emotion way before we knew that the organization even exist.
Chapter 4: What led you to decide that you needed an emotional support animal
3:20
3 minutes, 20 seconds
Suzanne, what led you to decide that you uh wanted or needed an emotional support animal? Um,
3:29
3 minutes, 29 seconds
so although it was spontaneous, I realized that once he did start supporting me more, but I really I can't
3:37
3 minutes, 37 seconds
go without him because when there's no one human, then there's always my dog who will comfort me and who will listen.
3:49
3 minutes, 49 seconds
And Rana, from your your perspective, what were your initial thoughts or concerns about this decision? Oh um well
Chapter 5: What were your initial thoughts
3:57
3 minutes, 57 seconds
so no concerns whatsoever. Uh actually it was a one of the best decision I made
4:05
4 minutes, 5 seconds
in my life and um I think I should do it much earlier but um yeah it's it was a
4:13
4 minutes, 13 seconds
quite unexpected but the best decision I made. One of the best decision I made.
Chapter 6: How has having an ESA impacted your daughters day to day life
4:19
4 minutes, 19 seconds
How has having an ESA impacted your daughter's day-to-day life and mental well-being?
4:26
4 minutes, 26 seconds
Oh, um it helped a lot. Uh so I I think like
4:33
4 minutes, 33 seconds
probably many many people will agree with me especially if you're on a spectrum. Uh it can give you a huge
4:40
4 minutes, 40 seconds
comfort support um helping with your sensory overload. So yeah, it's changed the life in a many
4:49
4 minutes, 49 seconds
ways in a good way if you know what I mean.
Chapter 7: Have you noticed any changes in the family dynamic
4:54
4 minutes, 54 seconds
Have you noticed any changes in the family dynamic or household as as a result of um having the dog a puppy as a ESA?
5:03
5 minutes, 3 seconds
Uh yes. Yes. I I think um I need to mention
5:10
5 minutes, 10 seconds
as well he is as much as he is an emotional support uh he kind of supports
5:17
5 minutes, 17 seconds
all of us. So it change our household as well you know.
5:23
5 minutes, 23 seconds
Uh it's just a bit happier um happier place you know seeing especially when he's
5:32
5 minutes, 32 seconds
supporting my kids. So yeah it's it changed in a very good way.
Chapter 8: Susans story
5:40
5 minutes, 40 seconds
Could uh one or both of you share a particular story or instance where the uh poppy provided comfort or support during a challenging time?
5:50
5 minutes, 50 seconds
Um, so during my GCSEs this year, it was obviously very stressful. I had a lot of
5:58
5 minutes, 58 seconds
revision to do and it it was just taking all of my time. And I remember one night
6:04
6 minutes, 4 seconds
it really got to me and I got really upset. And since Poppy sleeps in my room, he kind of sensed that I was upset
6:13
6 minutes, 13 seconds
and he jumped up on my bed and he just hugged me and he let me pet him until I calmed down.
Chapter 9: Biggest benefits
6:23
6 minutes, 23 seconds
And Susan, what was some of the big biggest benefits you've experienced since getting Poppy?
6:30
6 minutes, 30 seconds
I think there's just always some I guess something there, you know,
6:37
6 minutes, 37 seconds
to kind of lean on. He is one of my best friends. Um I can always go to him
6:45
6 minutes, 45 seconds
sometimes when I'm home alone. Um I don't have to worry because I have my dog. So I can always look to him for comfort if I'm feeling upset.
6:56
6 minutes, 56 seconds
Yeah.
Chapter 10: Supporting your daughter
6:57
6 minutes, 57 seconds
And uh what benefits have you seen from your side perhaps in supporting your daughter?
7:02
7 minutes, 2 seconds
Oh well uh many uh many but I think one
7:08
7 minutes, 8 seconds
of them it's definitely feeling more um I'm feeling more calm. I'm worried less
7:17
7 minutes, 17 seconds
about Susan because I know that obviously apart from us, you know, he is
7:22
7 minutes, 22 seconds
a huge part of uh uh you know uh her mental health, her well-being. So um
7:31
7 minutes, 31 seconds
yeah. Oh gosh, I could probably write a book about that. Uh so many different ways. Susan, have you
Chapter 11: Challenges with Poppy
7:40
7 minutes, 40 seconds
encountered any challenges or obstacles with Poppy, especially in public places or any like specific establishments?
7:49
7 minutes, 49 seconds
I when our family was staying in
7:56
7 minutes, 56 seconds
um hotels as emergency accommodation, we weren't really allowed our pets. Um, I'm
8:04
8 minutes, 4 seconds
not sure why, but that meant that I couldn't have my dog with me and I'd have to go pretty far to visit him,
8:12
8 minutes, 12 seconds
which was definitely a big problem because I I kind of need him in my life. Mhm.
Chapter 12: Emergency Accommodation
8:20
8 minutes, 20 seconds
So, that the emergency accommodation didn't let emotional support animals in either, did they? Uh, no.
8:30
8 minutes, 30 seconds
No, it's it's actually it's yeah it's bad for many of us because our situation
8:38
8 minutes, 38 seconds
our case it's it's not isolated. There is so many people and uh it's just sad.
Chapter 13: Social Life
8:46
8 minutes, 46 seconds
Yeah, we get uh oh the registry gets emails all the time about um having problems with pro with uh emergency
8:53
8 minutes, 53 seconds
accommodation. Some do take them, some don't. Do you feel that having a Poppy has helped your daughter connect with people in your community or has it affected your family's social life?
9:05
9 minutes, 5 seconds
Um, well, both. You know, in some ways both. Um about Susan, I I think uh it's
9:16
9 minutes, 16 seconds
it's definitely amazing to watch that it's uh uh he's definitely helping her um build her confidence. So that
9:25
9 minutes, 25 seconds
automatically will uh have an impact on her social life. So uh oh god I am yeah uh he is just a huge impact on on that.
9:39
9 minutes, 39 seconds
So uh and uh as well giving you know uh sometimes helps to break the ice if you
9:46
9 minutes, 46 seconds
know what I mean. So if you have someone with the animal it doesn't have to be a dog because she loves all of animals. So
9:55
9 minutes, 55 seconds
um that kind of gives you that potential conversation you can start and uh yeah
10:02
10 minutes, 2 seconds
animals are just great. So what can I say more about that?
Chapter 14: Most Surprising Thing
10:09
10 minutes, 9 seconds
What's the most surprising thing each of you has learned about uh having Poppy or as an ESA since you got one? And has it
10:17
10 minutes, 17 seconds
changed your view on emotional support animals? Same. Would you like to start on that?
10:24
10 minutes, 24 seconds
Um, so I kind of already knew that emotional support animals existed, but I didn't think it was
10:33
10 minutes, 33 seconds
such like a I wouldn't say a simple thing to kind of get the registration.
10:42
10 minutes, 42 seconds
Um, so I thought it was like a much longer process with stress, but I guess not. Are there any misconceptions about
Chapter 15: Misconceptions
10:51
10 minutes, 51 seconds
emotional support animals that you as a mother daughter team would like to clear up for our viewers?
10:59
10 minutes, 59 seconds
Uh yes, Suzanne, would you like to start? Um, I think a lot of people kind
11:07
11 minutes, 7 seconds
of see emotional support animals as like an excuse to kind of bring your animals everywhere, but I don't think you really
11:15
11 minutes, 15 seconds
understand how much an ESA can do for you until you actually experience the love and support from an ESA.
11:25
11 minutes, 25 seconds
Um, I didn't fully understand how important emotion support animals were to people until realize I can't live without him.
11:36
11 minutes, 36 seconds
So, they're not just that people say so they can keep their pets with them at all the time. It's a real thing. It's real support.
11:47
11 minutes, 47 seconds
Yeah. You know, everybody says that.
Chapter 16: Mental Health
11:52
11 minutes, 52 seconds
Yeah. Sorry, I was just going to say that it's a shame that people, you know, trivialize trivialize that because, you
12:00
12 minutes
know, we we should be more open, you know, and mental health, you know, we can uh we can deal with mental health in
12:07
12 minutes, 7 seconds
many different ways, not just the pills, not just counseling, but you know, the
12:14
12 minutes, 14 seconds
animal part is a huge in um in a mental health, you know. Uh so yeah, we should be more open.
12:23
12 minutes, 23 seconds
Yeah. Uh Susan, how does Poppy help you manage specific symptoms of your uh for you?
Chapter 17: Autism
12:34
12 minutes, 34 seconds
Um so I have autism and I get over stimulated and overwhelmed very quick easily.
12:45
12 minutes, 45 seconds
Um when that happens I often I don't want to be around anyone or um
12:52
12 minutes, 52 seconds
everything kind of around me is too much and just call on over. Um and he'll let
13:00
13 minutes
me pet him. He'll let me give him a when I don't really want physical contact from him. he'll still kind of try and
13:08
13 minutes, 8 seconds
push um just so that I don't do any um stems that I might hurt myself with.
13:16
13 minutes, 16 seconds
And uh Arona, how how have you seen this play out in real time?
Chapter 18: How have you seen this play out
13:21
13 minutes, 21 seconds
Oh yeah, I've seen it many times and um as sometimes, you know, heartbreaking it
13:30
13 minutes, 30 seconds
is. It's it's amazing to watch because uh you know there is no words there is
13:38
13 minutes, 38 seconds
sometimes not even a movement but the fact that he is next to her is just enough. I I know to
13:47
13 minutes, 47 seconds
some people it's just they they cannot imagine that but to her is just enough.
13:53
13 minutes, 53 seconds
I saw it so many times and um especially the time when we were separated when when he was in a foster family. That was
14:02
14 minutes, 2 seconds
I think the most clear moment because you know so many times she asked me mom
14:10
14 minutes, 10 seconds
can we please at least go see him for a bit. So we want to be able to h more or less often but yeah I it many times.
14:22
14 minutes, 22 seconds
Mhm.
Chapter 19: How receptive are businesses and service providers
14:25
14 minutes, 25 seconds
Um how receptive have businesses and service providers in your city or town been towards uh Poppy? Um and have you
14:33
14 minutes, 33 seconds
found certain places more accepting than others? And how's that been for the family?
14:38
14 minutes, 38 seconds
I don't really think we take him many places and the only place that we could have had him was the hotels.
14:48
14 minutes, 48 seconds
Um, and we didn't have a very positive experience there. Um, we've been to like caravans with him, but those are pet
14:55
14 minutes, 55 seconds
friendly and that was okay. You know, there were no problems. Um, he was just kind of seen as a normal, but I think in
15:04
15 minutes, 4 seconds
the emergency accommodations was a problem.
15:10
15 minutes, 10 seconds
Uh I think uh if um I would add something to that it would be um
15:19
15 minutes, 19 seconds
housing sector you know uh um if you try to rent property or you are in a um
15:27
15 minutes, 27 seconds
housing uh council housing it's it's very challenging and very difficult. Um and sometimes they will
15:36
15 minutes, 36 seconds
deny uh you know permission to have an animal even that you know we do have all uh paperwork
15:44
15 minutes, 44 seconds
uh from a few different professionals you know supporting us you know in
15:51
15 minutes, 51 seconds
trying to fight for Poppy so you know he was able to us because not just our pet
16:01
16 minutes, 1 second
she's an um huge huge support and help.
Chapter 20: Traveling with Poppy
16:07
16 minutes, 7 seconds
Uh you said you've traveled together with uh you said you've traveled together with Poppy. Uh what was that experience like? You said you've
16:15
16 minutes, 15 seconds
traveled together with Poppy. What was that experience like? And uh besides the hotel challenges, did you have any challenges about with anything else?
16:26
16 minutes, 26 seconds
Uh well if we travel with him uh the first thing will be to make sure that the place we going is friendly pet but
16:34
16 minutes, 34 seconds
friendly but obviously uh um it is more challenging to find those places and often they will be more
16:43
16 minutes, 43 seconds
expensive obviously. Uh so uh it can be sometimes
16:50
16 minutes, 50 seconds
challenging to you know found something nice and uh pet friendly. Uh but um to found that
17:00
17 minutes
place it it was it was okay. It was nice. Poppy was happy. We are happy.
17:05
17 minutes, 5 seconds
Susan was extremely happy to have him you know on the carvas with us. So yeah actually wasn't a bad experience on that front.
17:16
17 minutes, 16 seconds
Okay. What advice would you give to someone who's considering getting an emotional support animal, Susan?
Chapter 21: Advice for getting an emotional support animal
17:24
17 minutes, 24 seconds
Um, I think advice
17:30
17 minutes, 30 seconds
would be
17:34
17 minutes, 34 seconds
[Music]
17:36
17 minutes, 36 seconds
don't take advantage of your emotional support animal. I guess like if you pick
17:44
17 minutes, 44 seconds
the wrong animal and you expect them to kind of already know everything
17:53
17 minutes, 53 seconds
and be perfect straight away. Um, that's not going to happen. You kind I think you have to build a bond with an animal
18:01
18 minutes, 1 second
as well as kind of teach them certain things, but it's mostly about bond. So,
18:08
18 minutes, 8 seconds
you can't kind of feel that straight away. Yeah.
Chapter 22: Parents perspective
18:13
18 minutes, 13 seconds
And uh from a parents perspective,
18:15
18 minutes, 15 seconds
[Music]
18:17
18 minutes, 17 seconds
uh well, I definitely agree with Susan.
18:20
18 minutes, 20 seconds
Absolutely. Uh and um another thing I want to add is that um
18:27
18 minutes, 27 seconds
if if you're choosing to get emotional uh support animal, make sure you don't choose just because you know it looks
18:36
18 minutes, 36 seconds
cute or sweet, you know, because uh it's like what Susan said, it's about building that bond. It's much more than
18:43
18 minutes, 43 seconds
that. It's you know um like often kids wants animal but then we adults ending
18:50
18 minutes, 50 seconds
up looking after them you know it's you know just just trying to be cautious
18:59
18 minutes, 59 seconds
you know and making sure what you're doing and do your research obviously and and maybe have a little look around take
19:06
19 minutes, 6 seconds
that child or as if you are adult go um you know meet those animals H in person,
19:15
19 minutes, 15 seconds
you know, see how you feel because if you're going to find that one, you're going to know that's that's that's the
19:22
19 minutes, 22 seconds
one if you know what I mean, you know, and sometimes you just meet by coincidence, you know, from a shelter, you know, there is so many animals. So,
19:30
19 minutes, 30 seconds
um yeah, just be cautious.
19:32
19 minutes, 32 seconds
Yeah. I also think also get the right um size animal for your accommodation and also the right temperament cuz some of
Chapter 23: Get the right animal
19:40
19 minutes, 40 seconds
those some dogs like uh say a Jack Russell needs a lot of exercise and and uh
19:48
19 minutes, 48 seconds
uh time with it playing and some like I can see with Poppy will just lie there.
19:54
19 minutes, 54 seconds
Oh god. Oh no. He is just lying there right now because you know um you can feel the stress
20:01
20 minutes, 1 second
he can sense some of the emotions. So h he's going to be here but he's not like
20:08
20 minutes, 8 seconds
that. He he loves to play you know so it's opposite to what you're saying.
20:15
20 minutes, 15 seconds
Okay. Um, do you have any tips for managing the care and well-being of a emotional support animal, especially for
Chapter 24: Tips for managing emotional support animals
20:23
20 minutes, 23 seconds
young handlers or families dealing with disabilities or mental health challenges? And how do you divide the responsibilities?
20:34
20 minutes, 34 seconds
Two of them. Um, I think that we kind of divide the responsibilities between everyone. Some days I'll feed him, some
20:43
20 minutes, 43 seconds
days my mom will feed him, some days my sister will feed him. Um, but I think what we all have to make sure is that if
20:50
20 minutes, 50 seconds
a responsibility is placed on us, we have to do it. Um, and then there's obviously the unspoken ones. Just like
20:58
20 minutes, 58 seconds
simply play with him, make sure he's happy. Take care of your emotional support animals like they take care of you. I think that's really important.
21:07
21 minutes, 7 seconds
Mhm.
21:10
21 minutes, 10 seconds
And uh lastly, what's one thing each of you would like people to understand or appreciate about emotional support
21:18
21 minutes, 18 seconds
animals they may not realize, particularly in a family context like yours? Shan, you want me to start?
21:27
21 minutes, 27 seconds
Um I think I'm going to repeat myself but I think it's very very important to really
21:35
21 minutes, 35 seconds
be open-minded and bit more tolerant that you know um
21:43
21 minutes, 43 seconds
not every um disabilities or needs you can see straight away. H. So don't
21:52
21 minutes, 52 seconds
assume just because you know you think you know you look at someone but you look fine, you're okay. You you don't know what's going on inside. Sometimes
22:00
22 minutes
there is a huge battle and you know it and sometimes that a little bundle of
22:06
22 minutes, 6 seconds
joy as Poppy can really really make a huge difference. So just um be kind to
22:14
22 minutes, 14 seconds
us please. We need those animals and it's so many of us. It's not just me
22:22
22 minutes, 22 seconds
and not my family. There is so many people like us out there. Okay. Okay. Thank you to both of you.
22:30
22 minutes, 30 seconds
Much appreciated.
22:33
22 minutes, 33 seconds
Well, thank you for having us for the opportunity. We need to spread the word. Yeah. Okay.
