plane um the only problem is is in the UK you can't travel back into the UK on a plane no so um we got around that by

um uh what do you call it uh going to Brussels or Paris and then driving from

yeah one of the yeah one of the trains in the tunnel now takes them in the last 3 months you can actually bring your animal backwards and forwards fantastic

or another train but you can take them on that train there you go that's really great news to hear because that's that needs to change I just don't understand

money thing yeah and it's weird because they do get a lot of money when you bring a pet over from foreign countries

so I don't know why they wouldn't want to make more money uh if that was the case that needed to happen that they well you know people people their

arestes you know if you said you had to pay 501 pound to bring your dog back in you would do it yeah it's that's way

better than what you're having to do now which is absolutely go like you said well out of your way to try and bring back your family member and your well

she's mine is more than just a family member she's my protection she keeps me stable you know is she's absolute

necessity whenever I can bring her I bring her everywhere everywhere exactly and as you know in the UK s's they're

not covered like service animals in the UK but the loophole is is people that hidden disability they've got a medical

reason for a dog as in a medical Aid like a Mobility scoo Scooter or a wheelchair is covered so the person's

covered for their Medical Aid which is the animal so that's how it works in the UK oh I did I'm not in a wheelchair

unfortunately so I don't know if it would work no no like a wheelchair so it's a medical Aid like a wheelchair like a Mobility Scooter something like

that oh well I'd love to know more about that because I oxygen tank you know that's a medical your chihuaha is a medical a is

a yeah so then you are covered under the quality act 2010 and the Discrimination Act I can't remember what that date is

um all those sort of things um because of your hidden disability there you go well I'm going to I'm going to do that

then because that is a problem right now people just go oh you know you can't bring him she's only in Esa and it's like well but she's more than that to

me exactly we were I was invited to go on a panel with the service dog people

the assistance dog people with the prime minister's um office they were looking

at um you know because service dogs and assistance dogs have the same problem they can't get in places as well C it's just not s's right

it's actually those dogs as well get uh stopped so they were having a big uh online conference for that but just as we were about to start they called an

election not not election as in um uh prime minister's election you know and R rushy went out new one came in and that

uh that stopped that and then of course then they had a general election and still still no word on what's Happening

support animal yeah exactly of um the registry I noted they've got um cuz I had a look the other day they've got um besides dogs and cats they've got

bearded dragons um chicken they have got chicken there um uh Pony what else snakes rats here's here's

why the snakes and rats and the hamsters and the jbls the universities and are now using the

registry for a service for their recommendation so if you're a not all the universities most of the universities so if you want if got if

you want accommodation there you've got an Esa they ask them to register with the registry because they know they check you know the medical documents

because you know you're supposed to have medical documents to get registered and then um yeah so the universities are using now and also some councils are now

for their accommodation as well brilliant that's good I mean I'm not I I mean I know I always say that I think it's better that we are very clear about

how these boundaries need to be with these pets so they're not seen as a threat to people around them because that is a concern people always

have it's like are they going to attack my child are they going to attack somebody around them and they do need to be vetted they do need to be well trained because they are going out in

the public they aren't meant to be misbehaving animals um so yeah that that sort of stuff does need to happen and

then there's going to be less of an issue around why people don't you know have stigmas around them so yeah I don't have any problems with that I know I

know the registry itself is cancelled two registrations because there was two aggressive dogs that were attacking people and um people complained and um

so uh the registry said uh obviously one call the police right because it's against the law and then um once they

got proof that it was uh true they canceled the registration so they are proactive when that sort of thing happens when they know about it yeah so

I mean that's that's totally fair to me I in that sense it has to be like a support animal the animal needs to be safe in public

he turned three um January the 2 um but Max I've had since he was two

he he he was a rescue uh from one of the kennels down here in Plymouth and um I've had him he's been with me now

obviously 247 for just over a year but prior to that I had a little girl um again an English bulldog that

was given to me and I had her four years so I would have to honor her with with most of the work that the the animal's

done with me if I'm perfectly honest but Max is is no way a replacement but he continues the motion to be to be frank

um he's always you saw how goodl looking he is he's always getting stopped and uh children and people saying hello to him

so that prompts me me to obviously answer them which um is the main benefit

to me it gets me gets me out in the boat and it gets me talking oh cool well my first question was actually going to start can you introduce yourself tell us

a bit about your that that you already have so Debbie Debbie over to you my question what led you to decide you

needed an emotional support animal was there a specific moment or Reason well I was um uh let me think I don't want to

give it to go too far into depth but I I was working very hard um I was working

uh 12 days um six seven days a week I built myself a little castle here and

with a six fo fence with full CCTV and all that sort of thing I became very

reclusive um I went to work I came home and that was about it um long story short I had a couple of

heart attacks and it it became apparent that um the stresses of work etc were were playing on me

subsequently I was lucky enough to get a two we um in in patient at a at a he

Health Heroes combat stress um facility long story short um after 15

years I suddenly got diagnosed with vicarious PTSD as well as having a heart problem and um it it took 15 years to

admit it to be be quite Frank with you and I realized from the education they gave me that I was enacting everything

that PTSD had you know as symptoms so I was once I was diagnosed

as I say I was given a little Bulldog they they recommended that I had an animal um to keep me occupied and I was

given a little Bulldog Heidi her name was and I had her for for four years and she's the one that got me I started off

at 5: in the morning morning going up onto Plymouth Hall and people would there was always a couple of elderly people walking around Etc and they

started talking to me and it progressed from there and now um well prime example is I'm able to talk to you now I would

never have done this 5 10 years ago well I think it's important to to to

promote how fantastic it is to have an animal and what they can do for you and

they certainly I I I wouldn't um well they theyve saved me let's put it that

way so how's the how's the how has Max impacted your day-to-day life and mental well-being well he's I say he's with me

he's with me 24/7 for starters so I've always got a companion my wife still works so I've always got a

companion because he he requires um looking after to keep him as beautiful as he is and because he requires walking and

all the rest of it that gets me out of the house so whilst I still get frightened and have the anxiety and all

the rest of it with him next to me by my side it gives me that I won't say courage but it reduces my my tension and

my fear you know so I'm able to get out more and that obviously promotes better health for me would you share a particular story or

instance where your where Max provided Comfort or support during a challenging time

um yeah I guess I mean I don't know whether this is appropriate but last

year he he stayed he was with me every single night when my mother was Ill she

passed away last year but while she was Ill he actually stayed with me every night and I I looked after my mother

during the night my sister looked after her during the day so he he he knew if I'm convinced that he

knew what was going on and he knew that I was obviously a bit emotional about that as well as my my normal problems

and he was able to to comfort my mother as well because he used to put his head on her hand um you know she was she was

suffering from vascular dementia so she you know we like to think she knew what was going on however but when the dogs put his his head on her hand she you

could see a little smile you know my mother is was always a dog lover so he helped through all of that as well which

was fantastic um and ultimately he gets me out of the house otherwise I probably wouldn't go out so what's the biggest benefits you

I've experienced since getting um max as Anessa well as I say the benefit for me

is that it gets me out of the house um I no longer hide away in my in my bedroom per

which I did before I I actually gave up work and because of of the stresses with the heart and all the rest of it and then I I totally wouldn't go anywhere

and it's only because of obviously initially heidy as I said and Max that I go out out and about now but I I get in

I've never been refused entry anywhere with Max to be honest oh that's great to hear but have you encountered any

challenges or obstacles with having Max places or special events or I can't

really um I can't really think of any real challenges apart from obviously

having to show the ID having to show the letter sometimes um introducing people

to the fact that he is an Esa animal um and getting them over the hurdle of it's

not a guy dog for the blind it's not a a a a hearing dog but it is a dog that

keeps me level yeah uh keeps my keeps me under control if you like I don't lose

my temper I don't get angry of course I still get the anxiety and and and and the normal fear of going

out Etc but he's my rock as it were yeah the the only problem I've ever had is obviously you get challenged at some

shots because they'd never seen them before and then you show the card and of course they never seen the card before it's not that right but you just explain

it's a medical dog and then they go okay it's fine yeah it's I mean it I think 99% of the time people when you explain

it to them they understand yeah um I've only ever had one occasion where the chap took a little bit

of explaining you know more in depth explanation and I I I did have to quote the equality act but um you know that

that's sometimes happens yeah I had one problem at Tesco once well the very first time and um they just said you can't bring it in and I just said I

talked to the manager manager came I just explained calmly nicely and she said okay that's fine that's it yeah I

unfortunately some some people you know they get upset at the door and they State arguing you shouldn't do that you should just be nice and calm this is how

it is yeah but I think the other customers for you know for

example if you go to a coffee shop other customers would look and think and you it just reminded me of an occasion where

one other customer went to the counter and wanted to know why she couldn't bring her dog in yeah and clearly I was

sat there with my dog with the with the badge Etc and it was explained to her that my dog was um you know my ASI dog

not just a a normal straightforward pet I don't I think she was a little bit disgruntled but hey

ho there are some places in London now they cafes are taking any dog anyway as they say they're dog friendly and you

can take think it should be as long as your dogs will behaved you know yeah yeah you know I um a friend owns a restaurant and

obviously um was it just before the pandemic or just after can't remember no before you know business was going down

and um I just said you should become dog friendly you'll you'll be amazed how many people and um within a week he had

tourists who had brought their dogs coming in and they said oh great I haven't been able to find anywhere and they were coming back you know night after night having dinner there yeah and

it goes on it goes on trip advisor and things like that y I mean I I go into a cafe here and and they always say oh

does Max won a dog cup you know and it's ice cream Etc and I say oh no he's watching his weight you know great that people are getting that

way now so you know you know a lot of the animals especially the 's they're probably more healthier and cleaner than

the humans that come into the cafes and I can't comment I've said that too um so what's

the most surprising thing you've learned about your s's um since you've had one um well the effect I mean it I I cannot

um Express how much help both of the dogs have given me you know um don't get me wrong I've had dogs all

my life but I've never relied on the dog um Max and and you know Max and Heidi

like like I have now the the my other dogs were I love my dogs they were my pets but now it's more of a um

partnership I would say because um he looks after me I look after him

great so you I was going to ask how receptive businesses and service providers have been in in your town towards the SES and um have you found

that some places are more accepting than others um I yeah as I say I mean I I've only ever had the the the the times when

I've had to really explain what the dog was but mostly in this area they're quite good I I don't have real problems at

all I like hearing that I like hearing that so how does your ASA help you manage specific symptoms of your

disability or your condition well if I get if I get um nervous or you know anxious or

whatever then then Max will I draw him towards me and you know you I Pat him on the head and I smooth him down and that

relaxes me and it brings it does bring the stress levels down greatly you know

that along with the breathing is is is well it's just it gets you to the point where you can continue what you're doing

if you see what I'm saying yeah ordinarily without Max or Heidi I would have just turned around and walked away or come home or depending on what I was

doing and it would have been the end of the challenge as it were but with Max you know there's onward and upward

greater things we can do together I was talking to the registry yesterday before you know before this

show and um they were saying there's many doctors that won't even write a letter they don't even believe they don't believe animals are help for

people I don't I can't I can't understand that exactly well I I live in proof yeah yeah I'm just amazed that

doctors actually just say no animals aren't I can only assume they've never had the pet a pet of any kind themselves

that kind of lack yeah that's I find that hard to believe you know because I obviously I got a I got my diagnosis I

then quite simply got the letter and said you know uh Mr car blah blah blah

requires an animal for his support and simple as that um but maybe I'm lucky maybe I was lucky to but even if the

doctor okay let's say the doctor doesn't believe it all and you're a patient they should be trying to help you anyway if you come in and say it makes me feel

better or whatever etc etc I mean at the end of the day what you feel makes you feel better is whatever you whatever you say it is

isn't it it's because mental health is part of the process that we're trying to deal with so it means we're not going to them

as much we don't need to because we're feeling better just by having those absolutely Absolut in my case it's a warm fuzzy one sometimes they're more

leathery skinned but no he's he's um no he's brilliant

actually that's a good question ma uh has Max traveled with you and what was the experience like no I haven't I haven't um I'm very interested in in in

your introduction actually um because I knew that in the states that you know everything from an alligator to a a a

cocka pool whatever can go on an airplane but I didn't realize over here that I know they don't go on airplanes
